Percocet · Oxycodone and Acetaminophen

What Is Percocet?

Percocet is an opioid painkiller with two active ingredients, oxycodone and acetaminophen. Oxycodone blocks pain signals in the brain and spinal cord, while acetaminophen reduces the chemicals that cause pain and inflammation in the body.

Doctors prescribe Percocet mainly for short-term pain, such as pain after surgery or an injury. Long-term Percocet use is discouraged because it leads to physical dependence, addiction and other serious health risks, so Percocet belongs under close medical supervision.

Oxycodone vs Percocet: What Is the Difference?

Oxycodone and Percocet are both highly addictive opioid medications for moderate to severe pain. Percocet contains oxycodone and adds acetaminophen.

🧪

Oxycodone

A semi-synthetic opioid derived from thebaine, a compound found in opium. Oxycodone is sold under brand names including OxyContin, Oxaydo, Roxicodone and Roxybond, as immediate-release and extended-release tablets and capsules and as an oral solution. Doctors use oxycodone for ongoing pain, such as cancer pain. See oxycodone addiction treatment.

💊

Percocet

A combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen (Tylenol). The acetaminophen adds a second mode of pain relief, because acetaminophen is also an analgesic and a fever reducer.

⏱️

Onset and Duration

Both drugs take effect within 10 to 30 minutes and last 3 to 6 hours in immediate-release form. Extended-release oxycodone tablets last longer, providing relief for up to 12 hours.

Percocet Addiction

Percocet Addiction and Signs of Abuse

Percocet addiction is a severe condition that develops from misusing the medication, even when a healthcare professional prescribed it. The oxycodone in Percocet binds to receptors in the brain, blocking pain and producing pleasure and reward, so continued use builds physical and psychological dependence that makes Percocet hard to stop.

1.7 millionpeople aged 12 and older had a prescription pain reliever use disorder in 2018 (SAMHSA National Survey on Drug Use and Health)
Days to weeksof steady use is enough for physical dependence on Percocet to develop
3 risk factorsraise the risk of Percocet addiction: a history of substance misuse, mental health issues and a lack of social support

Recognizing the signs of Percocet addiction early leads to earlier treatment. The following are 7 common signs of Percocet addiction:

01

Taking Higher or More Frequent Doses

Taking Percocet in higher doses, or more often, than prescribed.

02

Using After Healing

Continuing to take Percocet after the original condition or injury has healed.

03

Strong Cravings

Craving Percocet and putting its use ahead of other activities and responsibilities.

04

Withdrawal When Cutting Back

Withdrawal symptoms when trying to stop or reduce Percocet use.

05

Mood Swings

Irritability, agitation and depression.

06

Risky Behavior

Engaging in risky behavior while under the influence of Percocet.

07

Using Despite Consequences

Continuing Percocet use despite harm to relationships, work or health.

Side effects of Percocet misuse include:

NauseaVomitingDrowsinessConstipationConfusionRespiratory depressionMemory problemsDecreased testosteroneEuphoria

Why Misusing or Mixing Percocet Is Dangerous

Misusing Percocet, or combining Percocet with alcohol or other sedating drugs, raises the risk of addiction, overdose and life-threatening respiratory depression.

Crushing, Snorting or Injecting

Crushing, snorting or injecting Percocet increases the risk of addiction and overdose, and causes respiratory depression, which slows breathing and can be fatal.

Mixing With Alcohol

Percocet with alcohol or other drugs causes respiratory depression up to complete cessation of breathing, overdose leading to coma or death, organ damage, blackouts, impaired judgment and reaction time, and impaired motor skills such as slurred speech and loss of balance.

Mixing With Benzodiazepines

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), taking opioids such as Percocet together with benzodiazepines increases the risk of life-threatening overdose, because both types of drugs cause sedation and suppress breathing.

Percocet Withdrawal Symptoms and Timeline

Percocet withdrawal follows a general timeline, though timing and severity vary from person to person. Medically managed withdrawal, using medications to ease symptoms, reduces the risk of relapse. See the full opioid withdrawal timeline.

Days 1 to 3 · Early Withdrawal

Anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, muscle aches and sweating.

Peak Symptoms

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, increased heart rate and high blood pressure.

Weeks 1 to 2 · Subsiding

Symptoms begin to subside, but fatigue, depression and difficulty sleeping can continue.

Weeks 3 to 4 · Psychological Phase

Most physical symptoms have resolved, while psychological symptoms such as depression and cravings can persist.

My daughter has been in and out of detox, rehab, residential, and PHP for years - with serious substance abuse and mental health conditions. This time around was the first time she made the decision fully on her own, contacted a facility, and was admitted into Still Detox. When I say we've dealt with many facilities, it's a gross understatement. But the team at Still Detox - her therapist Josh specifically - have made an impact on my daughter that we didn't think was possible. Josh has been communicative with me on my daughters progress, and has helped her with grounding techniques for dealing with acute PTSD and dual-diagnosis challenges. She's learning to self-soothe, and for the first time is genuinely putting all of her efforts into taking full advantage of this journey. She has just completed the program, and they assisted in finding a phenomenal facility for her to begin PHP. Just a reminder - no matter how much we love our family members, we can't make the decision for them to change, they have to do it on their own. When the time comes, I strongly encourage you to look into Still Detox as the first step. Sincerely, A grateful Mom

I can’t say enough nice things about this place. The staff here is wonderful; Whitney, Josh, Sam, Kim, Derrick, Elena, Gladys, Dr. Martinez, Mark, et al. When issues come up, as they always will in a rehab situation, things were always handled professionally. The staff here genuinely believes in what they’re doing. The trip down here was totally worth it for the top level of care I received. Would recommend to anyone struggling with an addiction. If you are please reach out to them or someone you trust.

Percocet Addiction FAQ

How long does it take to get addicted to Percocet?
There is no exact timeframe, but physical dependence on Percocet can develop within several days to weeks of steady use, because Percocet contains the opioid oxycodone. Take Percocet only as prescribed and be aware of the risks of long-term use.
How long does Percocet stay in your system?
Oxycodone, the active ingredient in Percocet, has a half-life of about 3 to 4 hours. Oxycodone is typically detectable in urine for about 1 to 4 days after the last use and longer in blood, saliva and hair. A standard opiate screen can miss oxycodone, so labs use an oxycodone-specific test. Age, weight, metabolism and overall health also affect detection.
What is the most common treatment for Percocet addiction?
Percocet addiction is a form of opioid use disorder, most often treated with medical detox followed by medication-assisted treatment (FDA-approved medications such as buprenorphine or naltrexone) combined with behavioral therapy.
Is it safe to drink alcohol on Percocet?
No. Combining Percocet with alcohol causes respiratory depression, overdose that can lead to coma or death, organ damage, blackouts and impaired judgment and motor skills.
